Recently, Dr. Anthony James Saich from Harvard University, part-time professor of Shanghai Administration Institute (SAI), won the 2014 Shanghai Magnolia Award.

Professor Saich is the former director of the Asia Department of John F. Kennedy School of Government at Harvard University and now serves as Director of Ash Center for Democratic Governance and Innovation in charge of the training programs for Chinese officials. As an expert in international affairs, civil administration and the affairs of China, he has made significant contribution to the academic collaborations and exchanges between China and the US.

Promoted by Professor Saich, SAI signed a cooperative agreement with John F. Kennedy School of Government in June, 2008. The two parties agreed to cooperate in joint trainings of civil servants, administration, mutual visits and exchanges of professors, etc. to collaboratively propel the development of their teaching and research. Since 2008, the Harvard teaching teams led or organized by Professor Saich have been giving lectures at SAI, the subjects of which cover governmental administration and innovation, public policies, public management, leadership, etc., producing satifying results. By combining "inviting in" and "going out", SAI has jointly held four senior China-US seminars in the two institutes and will continue the cooperation. Professor Saich also assisted SAI in holding the Shanghai Forum on Scientific Development and delivered a lecture on the achievements in the comparative studies of urbanization in China and the US. Thanks to the exploration and promotion of Professor Saich, SAI has been having academic exchanges with Harvard for these years and achieved remarkable results in civil servant training, which are widely recognized in the society.

As an award for foreigners set up by Shanghai, Magnolia Award aims to encourage and commend the foreigners who have made outstanding contribution to the economic construction, social development and international exchanges in Shanghai.
